So last Monday, while picking the kids up from school, while holding Emery, I stepped off the platform of the playground, and very gracefully rolled and sprained both, yes both, of my ankles. I have been out of commission since.
I have weak ankles. When I was younger and played basketball I pulled the ligaments and sprained them more times than I can remember. I don't know if I can blame the sport for the injuries of if I just inherited weak ankles. My sister, who also played basketball, suffered the same injuries.
I haven't really had trouble for years though. I just learned to wear ankle braces when I needed. Every once in awhile an ankle would give out for no apparent reason, but not causing any lasting trouble.
However, I am getting older, makes me mad, but it is happening. About a year ago, or less I can't remember. A friend got a group of women together to play basketball, hoping to make it a monthly thing. I went and played, I was out of shape, but had so much fun. The next day was not so much fun. My ankles paid the price and they literally were sore for months.
Then recently, as I have been more regular about getting on the treadmill, attempting to combat the affects of my old age and slim the waistline, my ankles have been acting up again. I was fine until I started to push myself and was working up into running instead of my usual jogging. It set those ankles off again, I have been paying for it ever since.
So this all leads me to last Monday. I had that moment, in my mind I thought, just as I was stepping off the platform, that maybe I shouldn't step off from that height, while holding Emery, wearing flip flops, with all the cut rubber surface beneath me. But not quick enough and the next thing I knew I was on my knees. I did have enough wits about me to set Emery down on her feet as I went down, but I did go down. I knew what happened, the pain made it clear and I was literally seeing stars. I didn't know how I would get up, but in the moment I was so embarrassed and wondered how many people saw I forced myself to stand. I really had to concentrate on not passing out, I didn't need another one of those dramatic scenes. Thankfully I had some help getting my kids rounded up and got to the car (thanks Shadoe for the help, making sure I didn't pass out or my kids didn't get run over!!). I knew I just had to get home before I could get off my feet. I made it, but have been down since.
Having both ankles injured at the same time is quite an inconvenience, I don't recommend it. I didn't even leave my room for the first 2 days. The stairs were an impossible feat. It has really messed up my schedule. I am sorry to say I didn't even get my house cleaned on Wednesday. No blogging since the computer is down those darn stairs. The laundry room is upstairs, so I did crawl in there a few times, but not much else has been accomplished. Although I have not had to cook dinner all week. That does make the inconvenience a little easier to take. Corey has taken charge of all that and kept the kids together.
I am slowly getting back, but too slow, I am old and impatient. Have I mentioned how inconvenient this has been?! So I am hoping for a much more convenient week this week and I will be avoiding playgrounds for awhile.
