So last Monday, while picking the kids up from school, while holding Emery, I stepped off the platform of the playground, and very gracefully rolled and sprained both, yes both, of my ankles. I have been out of commission since.
I have weak ankles. When I was younger and played basketball I pulled the ligaments and sprained them more times than I can remember. I don't know if I can blame the sport for the injuries of if I just inherited weak ankles. My sister, who also played basketball, suffered the same injuries.
I haven't really had trouble for years though. I just learned to wear ankle braces when I needed. Every once in awhile an ankle would give out for no apparent reason, but not causing any lasting trouble.
However, I am getting older, makes me mad, but it is happening. About a year ago, or less I can't remember. A friend got a group of women together to play basketball, hoping to make it a monthly thing. I went and played, I was out of shape, but had so much fun. The next day was not so much fun. My ankles paid the price and they literally were sore for months.
Then recently, as I have been more regular about getting on the treadmill, attempting to combat the affects of my old age and slim the waistline, my ankles have been acting up again. I was fine until I started to push myself and was working up into running instead of my usual jogging. It set those ankles off again, I have been paying for it ever since.
So this all leads me to last Monday. I had that moment, in my mind I thought, just as I was stepping off the platform, that maybe I shouldn't step off from that height, while holding Emery, wearing flip flops, with all the cut rubber surface beneath me. But not quick enough and the next thing I knew I was on my knees. I did have enough wits about me to set Emery down on her feet as I went down, but I did go down. I knew what happened, the pain made it clear and I was literally seeing stars. I didn't know how I would get up, but in the moment I was so embarrassed and wondered how many people saw I forced myself to stand. I really had to concentrate on not passing out, I didn't need another one of those dramatic scenes. Thankfully I had some help getting my kids rounded up and got to the car (thanks Shadoe for the help, making sure I didn't pass out or my kids didn't get run over!!). I knew I just had to get home before I could get off my feet. I made it, but have been down since.
Having both ankles injured at the same time is quite an inconvenience, I don't recommend it. I didn't even leave my room for the first 2 days. The stairs were an impossible feat. It has really messed up my schedule. I am sorry to say I didn't even get my house cleaned on Wednesday. No blogging since the computer is down those darn stairs. The laundry room is upstairs, so I did crawl in there a few times, but not much else has been accomplished. Although I have not had to cook dinner all week. That does make the inconvenience a little easier to take. Corey has taken charge of all that and kept the kids together.
I am slowly getting back, but too slow, I am old and impatient. Have I mentioned how inconvenient this has been?! So I am hoping for a much more convenient week this week and I will be avoiding playgrounds for awhile.

Should we get you one of those Jazzy chairs? I'd do it, you know. And we could decorate the little basket on the front for different holidays. You could carry your cleaning supplies in a little tote on the back and install one of those lifts along your stairs so you could travel from the first floor to the second. Or an elevator. Let's get Corey to put in an elevator.
But seriously. Sit back. Relax. Read. I know. Easier said than done. But try. You deserve a break.
And by break, I mean a vacation from your responsibilities. Not a set of broken ankle bones. :)
That's no fun. I've never had two ankles out of commission at once, but one is bad enough...I can't even imagine two! I'm telling you this getting old thing is not for me either. I've been trying to increase my distance running again and every time I end up with something injured...my frieds too. Hope you get better soon. Those basketball re-inuries, I tell you, really stink!
At least you have nicely painted toenails! Injuries we got when we were young really do haunt us as we get older. I hope you got some movie watching and reading in. Your Dad now wanting to see Emery since she pleaded w/ him on the phone last night. Working kind of hampers us from being able to just take off and come down. I hope you are doing better today.
Oh man. Ouch. I know you are just going crazy missing your cleaning days, but I'm pretty sure your house is so spotless it would take about a month of you out of commission for it to even look like the average home messiness :) Hopefully you feel better soon!
By the way, what fabulous bedroom furniture you have :)
I think you probably inherited this pesky problem .. can't tell you how many times I've had ankle problems .. luckily not so much as I've gotten older, but sorry you're having to deal with it ... hope you heal up soon!!! J
Sorry about your feet, I think that I can understand your situation a bit and I STILL have not learned patience. It is bad, feel for you.
